Smart Kitchen Storage for Joburg Homes: Beyond the Standard Base-and-Wall Layout

April 2025·5 min read·Custom Cabinetry

There's a standard kitchen layout that gets built in Johannesburg over and over: base cabinets with doors, wall cabinets above, maybe a drawer or two. It works, technically. But it wastes a surprising amount of usable space and often forces homeowners to stack things on counters because the storage isn't actually set up for the way they cook. These are the ideas that genuinely make a difference.

01

Deep Drawers Instead of Base Cabinet Doors

This is the single biggest upgrade most Joburg kitchens are missing. Standard base cabinets with doors require you to get down on your knees, move things to find things, and accept that whatever's at the back is essentially lost. Deep drawers — full-extension, soft-close — let you see and access everything from a standing position.

Pots, pans, Tupperware, dry goods: all of it works better in deep drawers. The cost difference over a full kitchen is real but modest, and it transforms daily use. We build these into almost every kitchen we design now because clients who have them say they'd never go back.

02

A Proper Pantry — Even a Narrow One

South African cooking involves a lot of dry goods, tinned food, oils, and spices that typically end up scattered across three different cabinets. A dedicated pantry — even 400mm deep and 600mm wide — consolidates all of it in one place and transforms the kitchen's organization.

In Joburg homes where the kitchen layout allows it, a tall pantry unit with adjustable shelving and internal door storage is one of the most used and appreciated features we install. If space is tight, a pull-out pantry column (a narrow but deep drawer unit with full-extension slides) works well in a slim gap between appliances.

03

Corner Solutions That Actually Work

The corner cabinet is where kitchen storage goes to die. Lazy Susans spin and things fall off. Standard L-corner cabinets create an inaccessible black hole. But there are better options: magic corner systems (pull-out shelves that swing forward), or a redesign that eliminates the corner cabinet entirely through a diagonal cut or open shelf that turns the awkward angle into an architectural feature.

We've pulled out more non-functional corner cabinets in Sandton and Fourways kitchens than we can count. The space is always salvageable — it just needs to be designed properly from the start, not treated as an afterthought.

04

Under-Sink Organisation

The cabinet under the sink is usually a dumping ground — cleaning products, a bin, some pipes, and a general mess. It doesn't have to be. Custom under-sink pull-outs designed around the plumbing can add meaningful organised storage to a space that's typically wasted.

The same applies to the space under the stove: a proper pull-out drawer for baking trays and oven dishes makes that awkward space genuinely functional.

05

Overhead Space Above the Wall Cabinets

Most Johannesburg kitchens have wall cabinets that stop short of the ceiling with a gap above that's too small for storage and too visible to ignore — it just collects dust and sometimes gets filled with a plant that doesn't get enough light.

The two solutions that actually work: take the wall cabinets all the way to the ceiling (requires an extra tier of cabinets, but maximises storage for items you don't use daily), or deliberately close the gap with a valance and use the top of the cabinets as a display shelf for items you're happy to see. Half measures — leaving a random 200mm gap — solve nothing.

The Principle Behind All of It

Good kitchen storage is about access, not just capacity. A kitchen can have enormous total storage volume and still feel like it never has space because nothing is easy to reach. The goal is to design so that the things you use every day are the easiest to get to, and everything else has a logical home.

If your kitchen in Joburg or Pretoria isn't working the way it should, it's usually a layout and organisation problem — not a size problem. We design and build cabinetry that fixes the actual issue. Get in touch and let's take a look.
